Chicken Dog Treats that You Can Make in Minutes

Chicken jerky dog treats are surprisingly easy to make. You can store them for months at a time when sealed properly, because of their reduced moisture levels, as well.

Chicken jerky for humans is somewhat of a different story. We prefer sauces, herbs and spices for flavor, while dogs simply love the protein and flavor of meat. Let’s see just how easy it is to prepare your own chicken dog treats, and duplicate this process for any kind of dehydrated dog treat.

Chicken dog chews – the recipe

Jerk chicken really only requires one ingredient, which is chicken. You can use scraps that would otherwise go to waste, if you’d like to. Many pet owners will buy a supply of boneless chicken breast, because it actually helps them save money on dog treats.

Trim away as much of the fat as you can. Cut the chicken into ¼”-thick strips and place them evenly on dehydrator trays, with space between each for air flow.

Set your meat dehydrator to 160 degrees F. Dry for about 4-5 hours, until 95% of the moisture has desiccated, leaving behind a beautiful, nutrient-rich concentration of chicken jerky. Let the dog jerky treats cool for about 30 minutes before storing in an airtight container, such as a zip-lock or vacuum-sealed bag, if you have one.

You can duplicate this process with other kinds of meat, as well. The convenience of a meat dryer is partially that you can simply cut the meat into portions, and cook it to 165 degrees for safe consumption, while it’s dehydrating.

Chicken jerky treats and beyond

We all know that dogs would love to eat nothing but jerk chicken. However, let’s explore an even more advanced recipe that’ll produce greater yield throughout the year.

  • 1 1/2 cups ground chicken (cooked)
  • 1 ½ cups chicken broth
  • 5 cups flour
  • 1 cup ground carrot
  • 1 cup milk powder
  • 2 eggs

Mix all of the ingredients together to create a meaty dough. Roll to ¼” thick before heating your oven to 350 degrees. Cut out treat-sized portions and place them on a parchment paper-lined baking sheet and cook for 30 minutes. After cooling, you’ll have a large supply that you can place in a dog treat jar.

These aren’t dehydrated chicken dog treats. However, you can desiccate your own milk powder to save money. Using a solid dehydrator sheet (without holes), pour the milk ¼” thick and dry at 135 degrees until most of the moisture has evaporated.

Place your dehydrated milk into vacuum-sealed bags until they’re ready for use. When you’re ready, take the solid pieces out and grind them in a food processor. You can use this same process to make egg powder, dehydrated vegetables, and many other food storage items.
