We use a fruit leather dehydrator to make our fruit jerky. You can get a lot more done in less time, and get better texture and flavor for all of your fruit leather. It also requires fewer materials and a lot less work.

How to make healthy fruit roll ups

The truth about this fruit roll up recipe, is that using fresh, organic produce will be easier and create more pleasing results. Although you can certainly use frozen or canned fruits, the less spices, sweeteners and thickeners you use, the better it will taste.

First, decide on the kind of fruit you’d like to use for your fruit jerky. You can use virtually any kind of fruit, in any proportion. Whether it’s apple, strawberry, apricot, blueberry, peach or any other kind of fruit, you’re free to experiment and enjoy the result.

We recommend keeping things simple. This makes it easier, if you see a bulk pricing or special deal on strawberries, because you can mix and match ingredients with total confidence.

The fruit leather recipe and how to prepare it

A selection of fruit (3/4 strawberry to ¼ raspberry or blueberry is a simple, yet delicious example)

  • Fruit juice, such as orange, apple, cranberry or pineapple juice (optional)
  • Honey, maple syrup, sugar, stevia or some kind of sweetener (optional)
  • A pinch of spices, such as cinnamon, chili pepper or nutmeg (optional)
  • Wax parchment or plastic wrap for rolling and storage

Thoroughly wash and then chop the ingredients for your fruit roll up recipe. They don’t have to be any particular size, but it can be useful to know exactly what proportion of each kind of fruit you’re using.

Place them into your food processor and liquefy. You’re looking for a more liquid consistency, so add your choice of fruit juice or water into the mixture, until you can comfortably pour it. You can also use water, as its moisture content will evaporate and keep your flavor consistent.

Taste your fruit puree, and remember that this may be the final recipe for your fruit leather recipe. Roll ups candy can be overly sweet when sugar is added, because flavors will compound and intensify through the dehydration process. This is true for any spices you use, as well.

Add your choice of spices or sweetener at this point. Using honey or maple syrup will result in a more leathery fruit roll up, so decide based on your preference for texture and sugar content, as well. Grade B maple syrup is a great option, as it’s robust in flavor and trace minerals.

Making your fruit roll up recipe in a fruit dehydrator

We highly endorse and recommend the use of a fruit dehydrator. Pour your puree directly onto fruit roll sheets at about 1/8 inch thickness. Use fruit dehydrator sheets that are specially designed for easy, ideal results for your fruit roll ups.

Many fruit leather recipes call for the use of plastic wrap. Avoid plastic chemicals, such as BPA, from leaking into your food, as well as the work and hassle of lining each of your trays, by using fruit roll sheets in your food dehydrator.

Set your fruit leather dehydrator to 140 degrees for 6-8 hours. Check for consistency, as your natural fruit roll ups shouldn’t stick to your finger or be malleable to touch. Don’t worry about dehydrating for an hour or two longer than called for, as you can moisturize your dehydrated fruit leather once more with water or fruit juice.

Finally, lay your homemade fruit roll ups on parchment and cut into rows. Since there will be some moisture left over, let them cool for about an hour before rolling and storing in an airtight container.

Using a fruit leather oven that features an automatic timer will make your life a lot easier when making fruit leather!
