What Is Dry Fish Protein?

Dry fish nutrition is something that varies based on the type of fish. With reduced fat and moisture content, salmon for example, will see a 10% increase in protein content, with the same amount of calories per gram.

Fish protein powder is an example of pure protein that’s been separated from fats, oils, moisture and digested protein. Making it is a complex procedure that requires mechanical apparatuses, the most modern of which provide a pure protein content of about 80%. Some of these tools include a press, centrifuge and an evaporator.

Dry fish nutrition is nearly identical to raw cooked form, just with less moisture. The best news is that high protein fish food can be made at home, in several forms. Fish based dog food, salmon jerky and dried sardines are a few useful examples. Let’s find out how to make them here!

Dried fish will come in many forms

Salmon fish nutrition is generally ideal in terms of protein. While it contains saturated fat, it’s also full of amino acids and essential vitamins and minerals. It’s nothing like fish hydrolysate in terms of pure protein, although some would say that it’s for the better.

Since salmon is about 10% fat, it can be difficult to dehydrate. It’ll cause the meat to spoil much quicker, and you don’t want to waste the delicious oils. You’ll also have to remove the skin and bones.

That’s not to say your jerky dryer can’t handle it. The best route to take is to sponge out the fat and oils with paper towel. Marinate the meat for 12-24 hours then rinse it before drying at 145 degrees F for 8 hours. This way, you’ll have delicious fish jerky snacks available for when you need them.

Dried cod fish, on the other hand, is ideal for your meat dehydrator. It’s generally 17-2% protein and only about 1% fat, with low calories and plenty of niacin, phosphorus and vitamin B-12, to boot. You’ll find plenty of recipes for fish jerky and marinades on this blog!

Dried sardines are crispy and delicious

Dried sardines are the perfect ‘healthy fish food’ for humans and pets. Their natural omega-3’s are excellent for heart, kidney, brain and skin health, as well as for their anti-inflammatory effects.

Because both fish from the sea and the farm can be contaminated with mercury, among other poisonous toxins, it’s hard to trust a source of seafood. Labels can also be misleading, as terms like ‘Atlantic’ or ‘Pacific’ can be used as brand names for farmed fish.

Set your dehydrator for meat to 155 degrees F. Remove the sardines, rinsing them with clean water before drying between two pieces of paper towel.

If your dehydrator trays aren’t made with non-stick material, line them with parchment paper. When ready, place the sardines evenly, leaving space between them to cook evenly, and dry for 2 hours. Reduce the heat to 140 degrees and continue desiccating until dry and crispy.

If you’re drying in bulk to save money, use vacuum-sealed bags. These will prevent oxidation and allow you to store your dried sardines for up to 2 months in the refrigerator.

Fish and potato dog food – fish dog food

  • 4 lbs. boneless fish meat
  • 2 lbs. sweet potato

As you know, fish with lower fat content are better for dehydrated food. You can also rehydrate it with a half cup of warm water, which makes it the ideal, healthy homemade dog food that you can make once and store for months at a time.

Cook your choice of raw fish, either baking or steaming it without the use of oils or seasoning. Boil the sweet potatoes until ready to mash, then combine the meat and potatoes in a bowl. You can increase or change the recipe for larger batches, as well, using the same ratio of ingredients.

Set your meat dehydrator to 135 degrees F. Spoon the recipe onto dehydrating trays about ¼” thick and dry until most of the moisture has reduced. Finally, blend it in a food processor and store it in zipper bags or glass jars.

A dehydrator for meat will give your dog healthier food at lower cost, and with less effort!
